Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery
Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) is the big area where techniques like Mini-sternotomy and Mini-Thoracotomy are included
Open heart surgery here is performed through a 4 to 5 cm length sternal incision. Surgery from the aortic root to the arch can be performed with this access, including Bentall,'s operation, David's operation, ascending aorta repair and replacement.*
* According with PubMed literature
Mini-Thoracotomy is a surgical access ranging from 5 to 7 cm in length. Through this approach direct vision surgery for mitral, aortic, tricuspid and pulmonic valves as well as coronary revascularization is widely offered. Mini-thoracotomy surgery differs from an ECS procedure because of a larger incision, rib spreading or dislodgment and direct vision surgery. With this approach the thoracoscope and the camera are not mandatory.
